Winbond provides a series of SLC NAND compatible with industry standards from 1Gb to 8Gb. Based on the features, users can easily find suitable products in Winbond's products to replace them with better prices and quality.
SLC NAND Flash (Single-Level Cell NAND Flash) is a type of flash memory that stores only one bit per storage cell, making it a single-bit-level storage device. This storage method allows SLC NAND Flash to be faster, more reliable, and more durable than other NAND Flash.
The speed of SLC NAND Flash is faster than other NAND Flash because it only requires one operation per storage cell when reading and writing data. Other NAND Flash, such as MLC NAND Flash (Multi-Level Cell NAND Flash), need to store multiple bits on each storage cell, requiring more read and write operations for each operation. The reliability and durability of SLC NAND Flash are also better than other NAND Flash because each storage cell only stores one bit, reducing interference and wear between storage cells. In addition, the operating temperature range of SLC NAND Flash is wider than other NAND Flash, allowing it to work in more extreme temperature environments.
Cost Benefit:
At densities of 512Mb, 1Gb, and 2Gb, the cost per bit is usually less than half that of SPI NOR Flash. Winbond's SLC NAND Flash provides a new way to offer sufficient code storage capacity at a lower cost while meeting the very high reliability and robustness standards required in safety-critical automotive systems.
Flexible choice of ECC function:
Winbond's SLC NAND can be used on any platform that supports the NAND interface. Customers can also choose SLC NAND with either 1-bit ECC or 4-bit ECC depending on the ECC requirements of the host controller chip, giving them more flexibility and options.
Trusted NAND Flash for data loss:
The comparison of the number of electrons per bit in SLC (Single-Level Cell) serial NAND helps explain why NOR is a relatively "reliable" type of memory. For example, in a flash that is made by 130nm node, each cell contains 4,000 electrons, and assuming conservatively that a cell will lose one electron per month, the loss of 120 electrons over ten years will have no impact on data reading. However, as the process advances, each bit becomes smaller and smaller, and smaller cells can only retain fewer charges, which applies to both NOR and NAND. Today's MLC or TLC NAND manufactured with 1x nm process, these smaller cells can only retain a small number of electrons and can easily leak within a few hours or days, requiring complex periodic checks and rewrites (scan-and-refresh) to maintain data. However, for automotive electronics, there is zero tolerance for data loss within ten years, and automotive electronic designers do not want to deal with the risk of complex periodic checks and rewrites (scan-and-refresh).
Good Data Retention in extreme temperature:
Winbond Electronics' high-quality SLC serial NAND developed using the 46nm process undergoes rigorous screening and testing procedures, fully meeting the stringent requirements of automotive electronics. As below Figure, under various test conditions at different temperatures, it still retains excellent data retention performance, comparable to NOR Flash manufactured using the 65nm process and below.
The storage method of SLC NAND Flash makes it more reliable, faster, and more durable. It makes commonly used in applications that require high speed, high reliability, and long lifespan, such as industrial, automotive, medical equipment, aerospace, IoT, Networking, Printer, Storage system, STB, XDSL devices, and the devices in military fields.
Winbond's high-quality serial NAND is capable of completing 10,000 program/erase cycles at 85°C and can retain data for more than 15 years, making it ideal for use in the automotive market. The performance of Serial NAND Flash is similar to that of Serial NOR Flash, but the unit cost is less than half of NOR Flash, especially for high capacities of 512Mb and above, where the cost advantage is even more pronounced. Therefore, another guarantee of Winbond's high-quality serial NAND is that no bad blocks will be generated within 100 Program/Erase cycles, making it ideal for use in harsh automotive environments.
